Willis Greenaway Half Marathon, June 12

This race, which honours IRA legend Willis Greenaway, and raises money for the Alzheimer Foundation, has always struggled to find a following, despite moving the date, and changing the course direction, and this year was no different. I had thought that a move to cooler June would help entries, but it seems that either the competing triathlon, or just the distance, kept entries to only 63 finishers. Those who did turn out were treated to excellent conditions and a well-organized race, with the usual medals featuring a likeness of Willis and a certificate with finishing time for all finishers.

The race itself featured a replay of "Battle of the Trevors" with Trevor Haaheim (M35-39) prevailing over Trevor Jordan (M45-49) 1:18:00 to 1:19:59. Kelowna's Gary Wade (M40-44) was third in 1:26:38. Pentictonite Jenny Ayers (F45-49) took her first IRA victory in 1:42:35, as masters swept the podium for the women. Laurelee Welder (F55-59) took second in 1:43:16, and Vernon's Lynda Proce (F55-59) was third in 1:51:31.

On age-grading, the Trevors were reversed, with Jordan first in 1:13:46 and Haaheim finishing tied for second at 1:15:28 with Ellis Andrews (M65-69). Both runners receive 195 points. Roy Uzelman was fourth in 1:17:54. For the women, Welder took top honours in 1:21:56, Diane Leonard (F65-69) was second in 1:23:37 and Proce bumped Ayers from the podium at 1:28:29.

Thanks to Ron Sherk for all his hard work in founding this race and shepherding it through the various changes. Ron claims he is retiring as RD to go ride his bike in South America, but we will see what 2012 brings.
